Forged and Launched
Anvil & Arrow – Issue 1
I had been searching.
I knew there was little future in my current job, so I started applying elsewhere—dozens of applications sent, most never acknowledged, a few with polite rejections.
Then, finally, a door opened: an interview. Then a second. A third. Then a dinner to land the job.
That night, the man who would become my boss said something that opened my eyes:
“I hire people who can replace me one day.”
That moment struck me.
Here was a leader who didn’t see mentorship as a threat. He wasn’t hoarding knowledge or guarding status. He saw my growth as part of his mission.
He understood the truth: we are meant to forge others.
The Trap of Scarcity
Too often, men see life as a zero-sum game.
If I give away wisdom, I lose my edge.
If I train the next generation, they might outshine me.
But my manager saw it differently. He carried the weight of responsibility to those coming behind him.
This newsletter—Anvil & Arrow—is my attempt to do the same.
The Crisis of Modern Men
Many young men are wandering aimlessly. They fall into two traps:
- Chasing dominance and pleasure at any cost
- Collapsing into passive indecision
Both paths lead to hollow manhood.
A knight is forged in discipline, strength, and service.
He fights not for himself, but for those under his protection.
As C.S. Lewis once wrote:
“The knight is a man of blood and iron... He is also a demure, almost a maidenlike, guest in hall, a gentle, modest, unobtrusive man... fierce to the nth and meek to the nth.”
Thankfully, most of us won’t see blood as Lewis described.
But we will face challenges that demand the best of us.
Why Anvil & Arrow Exists
This newsletter is a call to become the kind of men our families and communities deserve.
Each week, we’ll explore:
- Stories
- Disciplines
- Virtues
- Habits that shape us
As Aristotle said:
“If we want to grow in virtue, we must first see it.”
Together, we’ll cast a clear vision of who we want to become—and pursue that vision with intention.
The Anvil: Formation
That’s the anvil—formation.
But to remain there would be incomplete. That’s where the arrow comes in.
An arrow at rest is no threat.
But when forged with care and aimed with purpose, it changes everything.
We aren’t meant to be shaped for our own sake. We’re forged to be launched.
The Arrow: Mission
We’ll also look outward:
- Marriage
- Fatherhood
- Culture
- Work
- Leadership
We’ll sharpen one another and refuse to settle for drifting.
The Journey Ahead
This is the beginning of a long road—a lifetime journey—but one that rewards us beyond what we can imagine.
If this resonates:
- Leave a comment and let me know what you’d like to hear more about.
- Invite a friend.
- Keep your eye out for the next issue.
The world needs more men who’ve been forged—and launched.
Let’s become them.
