Qui-Gon Jinn: A Model of Virtue
I still remember walking down the stairs and seeing Luke’s X-wing lifting off from Yavin 4. An impossible attack—ending with Luke destroying the Death Star using only his instincts and the Force. I was hooked.
At first, I didn’t even know what the movie was.
But when Revenge of the Sith came out, I asked my parents to rent the earlier ones so I could catch up. That’s when it happened:
The Phantom Menace became one of my favorite movies.
Not just for the action or lightsabers—but because I could feel that the Republic was falling apart. The weak leadership. The stifling bureaucracy. The injustice in the Outer Rim. You could sense the decline... but too few in the galaxy seemed to notice.
And in the middle of it all stood one man:
Qui-Gon Jinn.
1. Be Present in the Moment
Early in the movie, Obi-Wan expresses concern about something elsewhere. Qui-Gon gently reminds him:
"Keep your concentration here and now, where it belongs."
In our world, distraction is constant—politics, markets, social media.
None of those are bad in themselves, but they steal from the moment we're actually living. Instead of enjoying our families, doing our jobs, or improving ourselves, we drift into mental fog.
Sometimes the illusion of concern makes us feel accomplished, when we’ve done nothing at all.
Qui-Gon’s reminder is simple but powerful:
Be where your feet are.
2. Trust in God—Without Being Passive
Stranded on Tatooine, with no money and no clear way forward, Qui-Gon doesn’t panic. He doesn’t blame others.
Instead, he trusts the Force.
That doesn’t make him passive—he still acts, searches, negotiates.
But he trusts that the path will reveal itself.
That moment changed the way I approach challenges.
I used to scheme endlessly—running through a dozen “what if” scenarios before ever taking a step. I wasted time and drained energy trying to predict the future.
Now, I take it one step at a time—with an eye to the future, yes—but with trust that God is already there.
3. Live as a Spiritual Father
One of Qui-Gon’s most overlooked virtues is how he treats Anakin.
He doesn’t just see what Anakin can do.
He sees who Anakin is.
He affirms him. He praises him. He believes in him.
Qui-Gon became the father figure Anakin desperately needed—one who could have guided him through adolescence and into a strong manhood.
And he modeled something important for me:
The natural role of a man is to be a father—to someone.
That might be to your own children, students, coworkers, or young men in your parish. We all have someone watching us, learning from us, being shaped by us.
When we protect and provide, we live out our vocation as fathers.
What About You?
Qui-Gon showed us how to:
- Stay present
- Trust the divine plan
- Live as spiritual fathers
As I’ve said in the past:
We need heroes to model. We learn virtue by seeing virtue.
So here’s your challenge this week:
- Watch how you respond to challenges.
- Ask yourself if you’re present with the people around you.
- Find a way to build up someone younger—someone who needs a guide.
The world needs more men like Qui-Gon.
The world needs more fathers.
