The Love Letter in the Leaves

The Love Letter in the Leaves

Autumn has always been one of my favorite seasons. The summer heat fades, life slows down, and the mower finally gets a rest.

What I love most are the leaves—the way they blaze into reds, golds, and oranges before falling. It’s a melancholy beauty. Their color is a sign of their end, yet I find myself grateful for all they have to give.

At some point, I started to wonder why God made them change.
They could just turn brown and fall, or drop while still green. Science can tell us how it happens, but not why.

I think the answer is simple, and yet profound.

He loves us.
The colors are His love letter—one more display of beauty before the cold.

God could have let the world fade into gray, but instead He reminds us that even endings can be beautiful.

That’s the mystery of the leaves: they don’t resist their season.
They give beauty on their way down.
And that rhythm—the giving, the letting go—is written into everything God made, including us.

The Rhythm of the Seasons

The year mirrors a man’s life.

  • Spring is our youth—full of energy and promise.
  • Summer is our strength—building, producing, providing.
  • Autumn is our legacy—the time to reflect and pass on what we’ve learned.
  • Winter is rest—the quiet preparation for eternity.

Just as fallen leaves enrich the soil for new growth, our wisdom and virtues are meant to nourish those who come after us.

We can either embrace mentorship or cling to ego.
One gives beauty.
The other withers away.

The Lesson of the Leaves

God uses the simple and ordinary to teach profound truths.
The simple leaf gives us an image of ourselves.
Our time is short, but even as we fade, we can still give something beautiful.

This week, look for another way God writes His love into the world around you.
Take five minutes tonight to pray a litany of gratitude—and thank Him for the color in your own season.
